English Heritage cares for over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places – from world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, from Roman forts on the edges of an empire to a Cold War bunker.
They protect an internationally-important collection of historic sites and artefacts which span six millennia, from the ancient past to the present day and include palaces, houses, hill figures, castles, abbeys, industrial sites, Roman forts and even deserted medieval villages.

Home of the first Duke of Wellington, Apsley House stands right in the heart of London at Hyde Park Corner.
The Duke – whose victories over Napoleon brought him fame and wealth – bought the house and remodelled it between 1819 and 1829.
Inside, look out for the grand Dining Room, shimmering with treasures presented to Wellington by grateful people, rulers and nations.
The mansion also shows off nearly 1,000 fine paintings, sculptures and works of art. You can admire paintings by Velázquez, Rubens, Goya, Titian, Breughel and more.
Multimedia guides for adults and children help you explore the mansion – one of only two aristocratic London townhouses open to visitors today.
